Tottenham transfer news: Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino determined to snap up Coventry midfielder James Maddison
The club are likely to be prepared to loan the player back to the League One side for the duration of the season
Tottenham are preparing to make a new bid for 19-year-old Coventry midfielder James Maddison – and are determined to secure a player they missed out on last summer.
The club’s head of recruitment Paul Mitchell and scouting adviser David Pleat watched Maddison in the defeat to Burton Albion at the weekend and are likely to be prepared to loan him back to the League One side for the duration of the season.
Tottenham are cooling on the idea of signing James Maddison from Coventry due to the League One club’s asking price.
Spurs have watched Maddison, a 19-year-old midfielder, closely this season and had been exploring a deal similar to the agreement they reached for Dele Alli a year ago.
Alli signed for £5million last January but spent the remainder of the 2014-15 campaign at Milton Keynes Dons before moving to White Hart Lane during the summer.
Yet Standard Sport understands Coventry are now looking for about £7m for Maddison – a high fee for a player who has started only 12 first-team matches. He is not thought to be at the same stage of his career as Alli was a year ago. When Alli left Milton Keynes last summer, he had played nearly 100 competitive games for them.
NORWICH City have completed a deadline day swoop for highly-rated Coventry City midfielder James Maddison, who has agreed a three-and-a-half year deal at Carrow Road with an option for a further year, subject to approval from the relevant footballing bodies.
Liverpool eyeing transfer of Norwich rising star James Maddison — with Tottenham and Southampton also keen
The 21-year-old midfielder has scored six goals and made five more for the Canaries in the Championship this season
Liverpool and Tottenham are shaping up for a summer battle over Norwich starlet James Maddison.
The attacking midfielder has shone for the Championship Canaries this season, scoring six league goals and setting up five more.
Mirror Sport understands the 21-year-old is set to stay at Carrow Road beyond this month, with Norwich poised to cash in on fellow midfielder Alex Pritchard instead in an £11million deal with top-flight Huddersfield.
But Premier League big boys Liverpool and Spurs are both huge admirers of former Coventry trainee Maddison.
Southampton are also in the mix, and all are expected to firm up their interest in the summer.
Maddison joined Norwich two years ago from Coventry and this has been his breakthrough season after a loan at Scottish side Aberdeen last term.
Wolves have also been linked with Maddison after passing up the chance to sign him two years ago but are not thought to be frontrunners.
