Tottenham tipped to sign one of Barcelona’s best young players
Carles Alena to Spurs?
There has been a distinct lack of transfer movement when it comes to Tottenham so far this summer.
As a result, Spurs fans can be forgiven for showing their excitement at the news that they are interested in signing one of Barcelona’s best young players: Carles Alena.
The problem for Tottenham is that Alena may simply be using interest from the Premier League side to ensure himself a better contract at the Camp Nou.
“Tottenham could sign Alena this month”
Just 19-years-old, Carles Alena has already established himself as one of the best young players at Barcelona.
Alena has played 40 minutes of La Liga football and was a mainstay in the Barcelona B side last season.
On Monday, AS report that Alena is yet to sign a new deal at Barcelona and could move to Tottenham for just 3 million euros this month.
AS add that Tottenham are best placed to sign Alena. They report: “Aleñá’s contract with Barcelona expires on 30 June 2018. As his current deal enters its final year on 1 July, his release clause will rise from €3m to €12m. Yet if a club were to swoop before the end of June, he would leave for a pittance.”
Alena looking for a better deal at Barcelona
Whilst the above appears true and Mauricio Pochettino has often been linked with players emerging at La Masia, it also feels like Alena is looking for a better deal at Barcelona.
Reports in the Catalan press on Monday suggest that Alena is close to a new deal with Barcelona, that would ensure more playing time in the first team squad under Ernesto Valverde.
Alena is keen to stay at Barcelona and the Catalans are wary of losing some of their best talent to big clubs in Europe.
Tottenham are likely a good club to mention since Mauricio Pochettino gives young players a chance – if this did happen though, at a scandalously low fee, it would be one of the signings of the summer.
Tottenham must ‘scratch their pockets’ with Pochettino keen on signing – Compromise may be needed
On October 22nd, we carried a report from Mundo Deportivo, who explained Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Barcelona’s Carles Aleñá after failing to convince him to join them in the summer.
It was also stated Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino was in contact with the 21-year-old’s camp about a transfer, but failed to convince the midfielder to leave the Camp Nou. The Argentine wanted Aleñá as Christian Eriksen’s replacement.
Mundo’s report has been relayed by various outlets across Europe, especially in England.
Wednesday’s edition of the Catalan newspaper now claims the north London club prefers to sign the Spaniard on a permanent transfer. That’s something they may need to compromise on.
It’s claimed Tottenham will have to ‘scratch their pockets’ if they want to sign Aleñá because he has a €75m release clause in his contract.
Even though he has made only one appearance this season, Barcelona don’t want to lose control over the player.
They’ll allow Aleñá go out on loan and if it’s a permanent transfer, then they would like to include a buyback clause.
Spurs’ approach for Aleñá in January also depends on whether or not Eriksen leaves the Premier League side in the same window.
Meanwhile, Mundo reports Real Betis, who were close to signing Aleñá in the summer, are still interested and they would be ‘willing to do their best’ to take him on a loan deal in January.
