“It’d be good to go there” – Player opens up about Tottenham interest, seems very keen

After a few months being linked, albeit weakly, to Tottenham Hotspur, Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez has opened up about the transfer rumours.

The 21-year-old was interviewed by Spanish outlet AS this week, and didn’t try to avoid the subject when asked about Tottenham’s interest in him.

“I try to watch a lot of football and learn from the big,” Lopez told AS. “We are here for that. The truth is that the English league is very nice. It is stronger, more powerful. It’d be good to go there.”

AS writes that despite being one of Celta Vigo’s best players, Gomez has one of the worst salaries in the squad, currently making around €400k per season.

He was questioned if his club have already called him to renew his contract, but apparently they’re not too concerned about it: “Celta didn’t say anything to me. I’m calm, doing things well to keep improving day by day.”

Gomez has 14 goals and three assists in 30 games for Celta de Vigo this season.

Even though his contract is not the best, he has a €50m release clause in a deal which runs until 2022, so it shouldn’t be easy to take him either.

That’s the kind of player contract Tottenham would love.

Pochettino eyes January move for La Liga goal machine

TOTTENHAM boss Mauricio Pochettino is considering bringing in a prolific striker from La Liga to help support Harry Kane.

Pochettino is reportedly keeping close tabs on Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez.

The 22-year-old has been in great form this season, having scored six goals in 10 La Liga games for Celta.

However, talented players seldom have few admirers and West Ham have already tried to tempt Gomez away from Spain in the summer, but failed with a a bid of £26.75m.

So far this season Pochettino has relied heavily on Kane, who has yet to miss a Premier League game.

Spurs’ back-ups Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente have failed to convince Pochettino their ability warrants a starting place in his side.

According to El Pais, Maxi Gomez is on Pochettino’s radar after his performances for Celta this season.

Reportedly Celta are looking for a transfer fee closer to £44.5m, which is the striker's release clause.

The fee was too much for West Ham during the summer, who had already spent over £100m from their transfer war chest, bringing in the likes of Felipe Anderson, Issa Diop and Andriy Yarmolenko.

Gomez has been described as a powerful, old school centre-forward who excels in the penalty area and as such would appear to be an like-for-like replacement for Kane.

This is the second campaign the young forward has spent in La Liga following his move away from his native Uruguay

Last season Gomez scored 17 goals in 35 league appearances.

Pochettino has not hidden his disappointment regarding Tottenham’s inability to bring in any singings during the summer transfer window.

And with the club’s new stadium still yet to be finished, it’s unclear whether Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will be loosening the purse strings to strengthen the squad in January.

Spurs could replace Fernando Llorente with Maxi Gomez

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing to replace one first-team ace this summer.

Tottenham want to sign Maxi Gomez in the summer with Mauricio Pochettino ready to let Fernando Llorente leave Spurs when his contract expires, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (24/2; page 61).

Llorente has enjoyed a good run of form since the turn of the year. He has scored six goals in 2019, and provided three assists in his last four Premier League appearances.

His form has helped the Spaniard - who earns £100,000-a-week, according to the London Evening Standard - win a lot more fans amongst the Tottenham supporters. But it appears that that has not changed anything in regards to his future - with his potential replacement already lined up.

The Sunday Mirror (24/2; page 61) reports that Llorente is expected to leave the club at the end of the campaign, and Pochettino wants to bring Gomez in from Celta Vigo to provide competition for Harry Kane.

The 22-year-old has been one of the few shining lights in a tough season for the La Liga side, who are in danger of being relegated out of the top flight. He has scored nine goals in 22 games, while he has also provided five assists in the top flight.

Gomez clearly has a lot of potential. So he will not come cheap, even if Celta are relegated from La Liga this season. But after a couple of very quiet transfer windows, Pochettino will surely be looking for the board to provide some significant backing in the market.
